The field app for medical gas annual tests.

Lantern Trace records every outlet, zone valve, area alarm, and source system as the technician walks the hospital — offline, on an iPad or laptop — and hands the facility a complete, traceable record.

In use on hospital annual tests since October 2026. Built by Lantern Medical, the company behind Lantern Academy.

What it does

Room by room, with nothing left to memory.

An annual test is thousands of small facts gathered under bad Wi‑Fi in rooms you can't always get into. Trace is built around that day, not around the report at the end of it.

Works offline, by design

Hospital Wi‑Fi associates and then drops packets. Every result goes to the device first and uploads when there is a real connection — in order, without duplicates.

Every active outlet gets a result

Floors, zones, rooms. A room is complete only when each outlet has a pass, a fail with a reason, or an unable-to-test. Pass the rest; fail the one.

Zone valves, alarms, and source systems

Pressures on the area alarm, gases carried over from the zone valve, manifolds and source equipment with make, model, and nameplate photos.

Photos as evidence

Nameplate, rooms-served label, gauges, wide shot. iPhone HEIC is fine. Photos stay attached to the outlet, valve, or plant they belong to.

Deficiencies that stay open

A failed outlet, a valve that won't close, an alarm out of range — recorded on the spot and carried forward until someone closes it.

A daily recap the director can read

At the end of the day, one plain-language summary for the floors covered: what passed, what failed, what needs a return visit. No jargon, no severity codes.

  • Finalize produces the annual report from the record itself, not from a separate write-up.
  • Optional vision assist reads nameplates and gauges from a photo and proposes values. The technician accepts or rejects; nothing is recorded automatically. Off by default.
  • Booms and ceiling columns are inspected on their own form, including a pressure hold per gas line.
  • Runs in Safari or Chrome on an iPad or laptop. Add to Home Screen; no app store, no install approvals.
Who it's for

Testing companies and the hospitals they test.

Medical gas testing companies

Your verifiers and inspectors capture the annual on the walk, not at the hotel. Each company is its own organization in Trace: your hospitals, your technicians, your records. Nobody else's.

Hospital facilities teams

Your own technicians can run periodic self-inspections of outlets between annuals and assist on the official one — in the same record, scoped to the facilities they are assigned to. Finalizing an annual still requires a credentialed signer.

"We show our work." The record Trace produces is the one you would want to be handed: every outlet, who tested it, when, with what result, and the photo that backs it up.

How we handle your data

Access is scoped by organization at the database layer. Data is encrypted in transit and stored in a managed US database. No advertising or analytics trackers, on the app or on this site. No patient information is collected — Trace records equipment, rooms, and results. Read the details →

Who's behind it

Built by people who do the test.

Lantern Trace is a Lantern Medical product, from Greenwood, Indiana. The same team trains medical gas technicians at Lantern Academy and tests hospitals through Lantern Service. Trace is the record that connects the three.
